Rolls-Royce (BMW.DE) Spectre Series II Arrives With More Range And Power As Rivals Retreat From Luxury EVs

Rolls-Royce Holdings plc

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars (BMW.DE) has unveiled the Spectre Series II, a refreshed version of its flagship electric vehicle, boasting 18% more range and faster charging.

The update arrives as much of the broader auto industry steps back from its electric ambitions, particularly at the luxury end of the market.

Last year, the Spectre became the British automaker’s second-bestselling model globally, trailing only the iconic Phantom sedan in sales performance.

The Spectre’s ultra-quiet propulsion, smooth acceleration, and strong power figures proved a natural fit for a brand that prizes road isolation and “waftability” above nearly all else.

“Spectre is a landmark motor car for Rolls-Royce,” CEO Chris Brownridge said in a statement. “It amplifies the qualities our clients value most: silence, effortlessness, and abundant power.”

Rolls-Royce re-engineered the battery cell technology to push estimated range to 390 miles, up from around 330, while also cutting charging times by 14%.

Power rises modestly to just under 600 hp, with 748 lb-ft of torque, and the car gains a native Tesla NACS inlet for access to the Supercharger network.

The Black Badge performance variant goes further still, delivering 670 hp in what Rolls-Royce calls “Infinity Mode,” making it the most powerful Rolls-Royce ever produced.

While updated pricing was not announced, the current Spectre starts at around $400,000, placing it firmly in rarefied territory even among ultra-luxury vehicles.

Interior appointments have received significant attention in the Series II update, with new material called Duality Twill available, made from bamboo-derived rayon and inspired by the bamboo groves near Sir Henry Royce’s former winter home on the Côte d’Azur.

The new Duality Twill material incorporates up to 2.6 million stitches and 10 miles of thread, reflecting the obsessive craftsmanship Rolls-Royce clients expect from every commission.

New “Placed Perforation” leather uses 78,138 precision-cut holes to reveal a pattern derived from moonlit cloud silhouettes, while a Brindled Walnut veneer combines non-fruiting walnut with eucalyptus fibers and a glass-flake lacquer.

Bespoke commissions and heavy customization remain enormous profit drivers for the brand, and demand for bespoke Spectre work is now surpassed only by the Phantom.

Some buyers are requesting more than 20 individual bespoke elements per car, and one client in Korea has installed their Spectre in a purpose-built gallery as a work of art.

The contrast with rivals is stark, as Lamborghini (VOW.DE) shelved plans for a luxury EV entirely, with CEO Stephan Winkelmann stating that demand for such a vehicle was close to zero.

Bentley (VOW.DE) has pushed its EV timeline back again citing market conditions, while Aston Martin’s (ARGGY) EV timeline remains in limbo with the brand staying largely silent on its plans.

Ferrari (RACE) is pressing ahead with the $640,000 Luce EV, designed by former Apple creative head Jony Ive, though its controversial styling has sparked significant backlash among the brand’s loyal following.

Rolls-Royce took the opposite approach, building an electric vehicle that looks and feels unmistakably like a Rolls-Royce rather than a radical departure from the brand’s established identity.

Whether familiarity or reinvention proves the better commercial strategy remains to be seen, but the Spectre’s sales trajectory suggests its formula is already resonating strongly with buyers.

Against a backdrop of widespread luxury EV hesitation, the Spectre Series II stands as one of the few electric vehicles at this price point that is actually finding a consistent and committed audience.
