Quantum computing is shaping up to be the next major technological frontier after artificial intelligence, drawing significant interest from investors and the U.S. government alike.
Five publicly traded pure plays are competing aggressively for dominance in this rapidly evolving and still-speculative sector.
Those companies are IonQ (NYSE: IONQ), Quantinuum (NASDAQ: QNT), Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ: RGTI), Infleqtion (NYSE: INFQ), and D-Wave Quantum (NYSE: QBTS).
All quantum computers are built around qubits, which are extremely sensitive to even the slightest external interference, resulting in high computational error rates.
IonQ and Quantinuum sit at the front of the pack on accuracy, both relying on trapped-ion technology that produces more stable qubits than competing methods.
IonQ has achieved 99.99% 2-qubit gate fidelity, while Quantinuum sits at 99.92%, making both companies the clear accuracy leaders in the field today.
The two companies differ in how they hold their qubits in place, with IonQ using a combination of lasers and microwave antennas while Quantinuum employs only lasers.
IonQ has been developing an entire quantum ecosystem through acquisitions in quantum sensing, networking, and satellite transmission, and is also acquiring quantum chip foundry SkyWater Technology.
That SkyWater deal would allow IonQ to manufacture its own chips in-house, giving it a vertically integrated structure that could prove to be a meaningful competitive advantage.
Rigetti pursues superconducting qubits, which can be made in conventional semiconductor fabs and offer significantly faster speeds than trapped-ion approaches.
However, Rigetti’s new Cepheus-1-108Q system sits at around 99.1% 2-qubit fidelity, which in the world of computing is considered meaningfully behind the trapped-ion leaders.
Infleqtion uses neutral-atom technology, where qubits are built from individual uncharged atoms, allowing for higher qubit densities than trapped-ion systems can achieve.
Infleqtion recorded 99.73% 2-gate fidelity in 2024, which is better than Rigetti but still trails IonQ and Quantinuum, while its speed falls between the two main approaches.
Infleqtion also has a solid revenue base from quantum sensing and precision timing tools, giving it a more commercially grounded position than some of its peers.
D-Wave Quantum has established itself as a leader in quantum annealing, a more mature technology that targets optimization problems in industries like finance and logistics.
Following its acquisition of Quantum Circuits, D-Wave is now working to apply lessons from quantum annealing to superconducting qubit architecture using Fluxonium qubits.
D-Wave believes combining these technologies can produce a system with the accuracy of trapped-ion and the speed of superconducting qubits, which would be a significant technical achievement.
For investors wanting exposure to quantum computing, a basket approach across multiple companies could be a prudent way to manage risk in this still-uncertain space.
If forced to choose just one, IonQ stands out given its accuracy lead, growing ecosystem, and vertically integrated strategy that positions it well for the long term.
