Target (TGT) Removes Kids’ Halloween Costume After Customers Say It Evokes Blackface

Target Corp. (TGT) has pulled a children’s Halloween costume from its shelves following widespread backlash from customers who said the product evoked Blackface and minstrel shows.

The costume was marketed under the name “Kids’ Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume” and had been listed as part of Target’s seasonal Halloween assortment.

Social media users raised the alarm after noticing that the costume’s design resembled a racist caricature with a long and deeply harmful history in American culture.

The retailer responded swiftly with a public apology, acknowledging that the product should never have made it onto store shelves or its website.

In a statement, Target said, “As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry. The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment. It is no longer available for sale.”

The company also admitted that the issue had been hurtful for its Black guests, team members, and partners across the business.

Target described removing the costume as an important first step in addressing the controversy that erupted following the product’s discovery online.

The retailer added that it is investigating how the costume made it into its assortment and is reviewing processes to prevent similar situations from arising in the future.

The incident raises broader questions about how major retailers screen seasonal merchandise, particularly items targeted at children during high-volume shopping periods like Halloween.

Target has faced scrutiny over merchandise decisions in recent years, and this latest controversy arrives as retailers pay increasingly close attention to social and cultural sensitivities in their product lines.

In overnight trading on the NYSE, TGT shares were losing approximately 0.18 percent, trading at $169.58, following a 2.7 percent gain during the previous regular trading session.

The stock movement suggests investors are watching the situation closely, though the market reaction has so far been relatively contained given the scale of the public backlash.
