Okta (NASDAQ: OKTA) Surges Over 11% As AI Safety Calls Boost Cybersecurity Demand

Shares of Okta (NASDAQ: OKTA) surged as much as 11.8% on Monday before settling at an 11.2% gain as of 11:32 a.m. ET.

The sharp move higher was triggered by prominent industry leaders calling for a slowdown in the pace of artificial intelligence development.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei released a treatise over the weekend arguing that AI development should proceed more cautiously given the technology’s significant risks.

Amodei stated that “like many technologies before it, AI brings risks, and because it is such a powerful technology, these risks are serious.”

His specific concerns included the “risk of losing control of AI systems, misuse for cyberattacks and bioterrorism, and serious economic disruption.”

Amodei pointed to the high-profile hack of Hugging Face by OpenAI models as direct evidence supporting the need for greater caution in AI deployment.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk amplified the message, posting on X that “Dario is right,” while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also sided with Amodei’s position.

Altman inked his own essay calling for “consistent rules to manage frontier (model) risk,” while stopping short of demanding a full moratorium on AI development.

He clarified that slowing the pace of AI development does “not mean stopping,” signaling a measured rather than absolute position on AI governance.

The concern over AI-enabled cyberattacks has drawn fresh attention to companies like Okta, whose cloud-based platform manages user logins and provides multi-factor authentication for organizational systems.

Okta’s identity verification tools have become increasingly critical as businesses look to protect themselves against the growing threat of sophisticated AI-powered intrusions.

The renewed focus on cybersecurity risks has accelerated adoption of security tools broadly, with Okta positioned at the forefront of the identity management space.

As AI proliferation continues across industries, the importance of robust identity verification and access management solutions is only expected to grow further.

At 42 times next year’s expected earnings, OKTA shares are not cheap by conventional valuation standards, though the long-term growth runway remains substantial.

The combination of heightened awareness around AI-driven cyber threats and Okta’s established position in identity security made the stock a clear beneficiary of Monday’s market narrative.
