Medpace (MEDP) delivered a landmark quarter for contract wins, with net new business awards hitting an all-time high during its third-quarter 2026 earnings call on October 22, 2026.
The clinical trial management company has emerged as a closely watched name for long-term investors tracking demand signals in the contract research organization sector.
Chief Executive Officer August James Troendle confirmed the milestone, stating that “net new business awards reached an all time high in the quarter and our last 12-month closing awards was 23.9%.”
The record bookings figure reflects sustained client demand flowing into backlog, which represents contracted work not yet performed by the company.
Strong backlog growth is a key indicator for contract research organizations, as it provides forward revenue visibility and signals confidence among pharmaceutical and biotech clients.
Beyond the headline bookings number, the composition of project cancellations also shifted in a meaningful way during the quarter, offering additional insight into the health of underlying demand.
Management noted that cancellations are no longer being driven primarily by clients running short on funding, a trend that had previously weighed on the sector during tighter capital environments.
Troendle said, “Our cancellations now are primarily those of product failure,” indicating that clients pulling projects are doing so because of clinical safety signals or disappointing efficacy results rather than financial constraints.
This distinction matters considerably for investors, as cancellations driven by science rather than capital suggest that client balance sheets are in reasonable shape and that demand for trial services remains intact.
Looking further ahead, the company addressed investor questions around 2027 financial guidance, choosing to defer full-year targets until fourth-quarter results are available in February.
Troendle offered reassurance to analysts and shareholders, saying, “We will provide guidance for 2027 at the end of our Q4 reporting. At the time of our Q4 reporting in February, however, we see no large disconnect between analyst consensus estimates and our current modeling of 2027.”
The decision to wait on formal guidance reflects a deliberate approach to ensure that fourth-quarter bookings data is incorporated before committing to annual financial targets.
That posture aligns with how management has historically approached guidance, prioritizing accuracy over early disclosure when the final quarter’s contract activity could shift the full picture.
Oncology research continues to represent a core area of contract demand for Medpace, and the company has been expanding its operational capacity in its Cincinnati base to support growing workloads.
For long-term investors, the combination of record awards, healthier cancellation dynamics, and management confidence around consensus alignment presents a constructive picture heading into 2027.
