The Australian share market has pulled back from its session highs in mid-market trading, giving up a portion of its early advance despite positive leads from Wall Street.
The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index was gaining 8.50 points or 0.10 percent to 8,491.30 after touching an intraday high of 8,515.30 earlier in the session.
The broader All Ordinaries Index was also in positive territory, rising 11.60 points or 0.13 percent to 8,759.20 as the session progressed.
Gains in gold miners and energy stocks were doing much of the heavy lifting, partially offset by weakness in iron ore miners and technology shares.
Among the major miners, BHP Group edged down 0.4 percent while Mineral Resources declined almost 4 percent, with Rio Tinto and Fortescue Metals each losing close to 1 percent.
Oil stocks provided some support, with Origin Energy gaining 1.5 percent and Woodside Energy adding almost 1 percent, while Santos and Beach Energy edged up between 0.1 and 0.5 percent.
Gold miners were among the standout performers, with Evolution Mining surging more than 6 percent and Northern Star Resources climbing almost 5 percent during the session.
Newmont gained almost 4 percent, Gold Road Resources added more than 1 percent, and Resolute Mining edged up 0.5 percent, rounding out a broadly positive session for the gold sector.
In the technology space, Afterpay owner Block, Appen, and WiseTech Global each lost more than 1 percent, while Xero rose more than 1 percent and Zip advanced almost 3 percent.
Among the big four banks, Commonwealth Bank and National Australia Bank edged down between 0.1 and 0.3 percent, while Westpac and ANZ Banking each edged up between 0.2 and 0.5 percent.
Media stocks attracted notable attention after several companies reported their half-yearly results, driving sharp moves across the sector.
Shares in Nine Entertainment Co Holdings surged 10.9 percent, Seven West Media gained 6.1 percent, and SGH Ltd. rose 5.2 percent following their respective half-year earnings updates.
Charter Hall Social Infrastructure shares jumped 7.8 percent after the company also reported its half-yearly financial results.
The Australian dollar was trading at $0.627 against the US dollar as markets digested the day’s mixed trading signals.
