Meta Description: New York is not the only state transforming casino gaming in 2026. See where fresh ideas are taking shape.
In the U.S., a casino visit can be very different depending on where you live. In one state, you might walk into a multibillion-dollar resort filled with restaurants and live entertainment. In another, you can join the fun casino experience through an app.
Giving people the option to choose from different experiences is helping several states stand out this year in terms of revenue. New York, Virginia, North Carolina, Maine, Michigan, and New Jersey are all expanding casino gaming, but each one their own way.
New York City Finally Got Its Full Commercial Casino
New York made one of the most outstanding casino moves of 2026. On April 28, New York City got its first full commercial casino with traditional dealer-operated games. The property opened its upgraded floor with more than 200 live tables, including blackjack, craps, roulette, and baccarat. Visitors can also choose from more than 2,500 slot machines.
Plans include a hotel, additional restaurants, a 7,000-seat entertainment venue, and more than 12 acres of public green space. New casino development propositions were also made for Citi Field and Bronx by different operators.
Those developments will take time but the direction is clear. The state wants casinos to function as tourism, hospitality, employment, and entertainment projects, not isolated gambling venues.
Virginia Is Building Casino Destinations Step By Step
Virginia remains a relatively young commercial casino market, but it has already shown that even new facilities can attract substantial demand.
A temporary facility that opened its doors in Petersburg this year welcomed more than 500,000 visitors within its first six months and generated $77.1 million in adjusted gaming revenue through June. The casino launched with more than 900 slot machines and over 30 table games.
A permanent resort is being built next to the temporary casino. It is expected to feature a hotel, more gaming options, as well as dining, and a dedicated entertainment space.
Virginia’s move of creating a temporary venue while waiting for a major casino development was smart. The temporary venue allows the operator to build a customer base, test demand, hire locally, and generate tax revenue while the permanent resort takes shape.

North Carolina Is Expanding Tribal Gaming Into a Resort Economy
North Carolina also took an important step in May with the opening of the introductory phase of Catawba Two Kings Casino. Located near Charlotte, the new venue replaced the prefabricated temporary casino that had served customers during the early years of the project.
The introductory casino opened with approximately 1,350 slot machines, 36 electronic table games, and 22 traditional table games. It also includes sports betting kiosks, a high-limit room, a restaurant, and a bar.
That alone represents a major improvement. Yet it is only one part of a planned $1.25 billion development.
When complete, the resort is expected to cover close to 2 million square feet. Plans call for a 24-story hotel with 385 rooms, roughly 4,300 slots, 100 table games, 11 dining venues, and 11 bars.
The project could also support around 2,200 permanent jobs which will contribute directly to the long-term objective of broader economic activity.
Maine Is Creating a Tribal-Led Online Casino Market
Unlike the states mentioned previously, Maine’s biggest casino development comes from a new legal framework.
The state adopted a new legislation in 2026 that allows the federally recognized tribal governments to participate in online casino gaming. The structure builds on Maine’s existing mobile sports betting model.
Supporters have presented the legislation as an economic development opportunity. The model may allow more gaming revenue to remain within Maine while giving tribal governments access to a regulated digital market.
The Maine Gambling Control Unit has been working on licensing and technical rules. Proposed internet gaming regulations were published during the summer, although operators must still complete the regulatory approval process before accepting wagers.
Michigan Keeps Improving an Already Mature Online Market
Michigan continues to show what a mature online casino market can achieve. There are 15 authorized online casino operators in the state. The level of competition gives brands a strong reason to keep improving their products resulting in a yearly 28% increase of adjusted iGaming revenue.
In the online market game libraries are not the only consideration. Customers judge an online casino by how quickly it loads, how easy it is to find games, whether withdrawals are easy, and how clearly the operator explains bonuses and account rules.
Established platforms like BetMGM online casino offer the smoothest experience to players, from registration and payments to live-dealer games, rewards, customer support, and responsible gambling controls.
Michigan has also increased its enforcement efforts. During a four-month period leading up to April, the state regulator issued cease-and-desist orders to 45 offshore gambling operators accused of offering unlicensed casino games or sports wagering.
That enforcement is part of the customer experience too. A regulated market becomes more valuable when customers can clearly distinguish licensed operators from offshore websites offering fewer protections.
New Jersey Proves Online and Atlantic City Casinos Can Grow Together
New Jersey remains one of the most important casino markets to watch because it combines a famous physical destination with one of the country’s most established online gaming industries.
In June 2026, New Jersey online casinos generated approximately $271 million in internet gaming win which exceeded the $257.3 million generated by Atlantic City’s nine casino hotels during the same month.
It would be easy to interpret that as online gaming replacing physical casinos. The reality is more nuanced as many of New Jersey’s online platforms operate through partnerships with Atlantic City properties. Customers may use the same brand for mobile slots, sports betting, hotel stays, restaurants, and casino rewards. New Jersey’s business model shows that instead of rivalizing digital and physical gaming it is possible to connect the two.

The Best Casino Markets Are Offering Multiple Ways to Participate
The casino progress in 2026 is not happening through one model. Every state is expanding their operations their own way but the common theme is giving customers a choice. Customers want to decide where, when, and how they play. States that combine convenience with strong regulation, memorable venues, and reliable technology are the ones making the biggest strides.
