Nvidia (NVDA) Tops 17% In Vanguard’s Tech ETF (VGT) As AI Exposure Race Heats Up

Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) surged 8.7% on August 27 after the company delivered blowout second-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings results that exceeded Wall Street expectations.

Nvidia’s market cap closed that same day at $5.52 trillion, placing it nearly a trillion dollars ahead of Apple, the world’s second most valuable company.

The chipmaker now commands 7.6% of the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: VOO), making it one of the most dominant single-stock weights in any broad index fund.

However, investors seeking even greater Nvidia exposure without abandoning the low-cost ETF structure have several compelling Vanguard options to consider.

Five Vanguard ETFs currently hold Nvidia weightings exceeding 12%, with the Vanguard Information Technology ETF (NYSEMKT: VGT) leading the pack at 17.2% as of July 31.

The Vanguard Russell 1000 Growth ETF (NASDAQ: VONG) follows with a 14.6% Nvidia weighting, while the Vanguard S&P 500 Growth ETF (NYSEMKT: VOOG) sits at 13.9% across just 148 holdings.

The Vanguard Morningstar Mega Cap Growth ETF (NYSEMKT: MGK) holds 13.5% in Nvidia, and the Vanguard Morningstar Growth ETF (NYSEMKT: VUG) carries a 12.8% weighting, with a rock-bottom expense ratio of just 0.03%.

The Vanguard Information Technology ETF carries the highest expense ratio of the group at 0.09%, which still amounts to only $9 per $10,000 invested annually.

A striking 47.9% of the Vanguard Information Technology ETF is invested in semiconductor stocks, led by Nvidia, Broadcom, Micron, and Advanced Micro Devices.

The fund also allocates 27.2% to Apple and Microsoft, two companies taking notably different but complementary approaches to capitalizing on the ongoing AI buildout.

Microsoft is a leading hyperscaler investing heavily in AI data centers, positioning it closer to the infrastructure layer of the AI value chain.

Apple is taking a capital-light approach to AI by providing the hardware upon which AI developers and tools can run, essentially betting on broader consumer adoption across devices.

The Vanguard Information Technology ETF also includes software stocks such as Salesforce, which jumped 22.6% after reporting earnings driven by a partnership with Anthropic, strong AI product demand, and higher guidance.

The Vanguard Morningstar Mega Cap Growth ETF (MGK) concentrates a whopping 69.7% of its assets across just 10 holdings, including Nvidia, Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Broadcom, Meta Platforms, Eli Lilly, Tesla, and AMD.

That concentration makes MGK a bold option for investors wanting to bet specifically on the largest growth stocks, though it excludes pure semiconductor plays in favor of cross-sector mega-cap names.

Growth-focused ETFs like VOOG and VONG offer a middle ground, screening their respective indices for growth characteristics while maintaining broader diversification than the mega-cap focused funds.

Unlike sector ETFs, growth ETFs capture AI-adjacent names from outside the technology sector, including consumer discretionary and communication services companies such as Amazon, Tesla, Alphabet, and Meta Platforms.

For investors specifically focused on AI infrastructure and the full semiconductor value chain, the Vanguard Information Technology ETF stands out as the most targeted option among Vanguard’s low-cost lineup.

Buying a low-cost tech sector ETF like the Vanguard Information Technology ETF represents a broad bet on the future of AI rather than simply chasing what has already performed well in recent quarters.
