BP PLC (LSE:BP.) has confirmed Ian Tyler as its permanent chair with immediate effect, ending the interim arrangement that began in May 2026.
Tyler had originally joined BP’s board as a non-executive director last April before stepping into the interim chair role on 26 May 2026.
The decision to make the appointment permanent followed an extensive search process that considered both internal and external candidates, the company said.
Tyler brings a broad background spanning energy, natural resources, engineering, and construction to one of the world’s most scrutinised boardrooms.
He currently serves as chair of Grafton Group PLC (ISE:GFTU) and as senior independent director of Anglo American PLC (LSE:AAL), adding significant cross-sector governance experience to his profile.
His previous board roles include chairing Cairn Energy and Vistry Group, as well as serving as a non-executive director at BAE Systems.
Before transitioning into non-executive roles, Tyler spent 17 years at Balfour Beatty, including eight years as chief executive of the construction and infrastructure giant.
BP senior independent director Dame Amanda Blanc praised the appointment, saying: “Ian brings significant experience providing challenge and support to executive teams, while maintaining strong governance and oversight on behalf of shareholders.”
Blanc added: “These qualities have been evident during his time as Interim Chair, where he has secured the confidence of the board and executive management through his considered leadership, judgement and integrity.”
Tyler outlined his priorities for the role, stating: “I will lead the board’s evolution, ensuring we have the depth, experience and capabilities needed to support the company’s strategic priorities and long-term value creation.”
He added that developing the board and strengthening engagement with BP shareholders would be among his key areas of focus going forward.
In a separate announcement, BP confirmed that Dame Amanda Blanc will not seek re-election at its 2027 annual general meeting and will depart once a successor senior independent director is appointed.
Tyler acknowledged Blanc’s service to the company and said she would remain in her position until her replacement has been identified and confirmed.
He has also committed to reviewing his existing external board commitments to ensure he can dedicate sufficient time to leading BP’s board effectively.
