Shares of the Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X Shares ETF (NYSEMKT: SOXL) fell sharply on Monday, dropping 15% through midday trading as semiconductor stocks took a broad hit.
The sell-off follows a weekend in which three of the most prominent voices in artificial intelligence publicly called for a coordinated slowdown in AI development, rattling investor confidence across the sector.
Elon Musk, Dario Amodei, and Sam Altman, the leaders of SpaceXAI, Anthropic, and OpenAI respectively, each warned of the dangers of AI advancing too quickly and without sufficient caution.
Their unified message sent shockwaves through tech markets, with semiconductor companies facing the sharpest declines given their central role in powering AI infrastructure.
According to Direxion, SOXL’s three largest holdings are Micron (NASDAQ: MU), Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD), and Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), all of which fell hard on the news.
Micron shares dropped 5.7%, while AMD fell 4.5% and Nvidia declined 2.8% through midday trading on Monday.
Other top-10 holdings in the ETF, including Marvell Technology (NASDAQ: MRVL) and Applied Materials (NASDAQ: AMAT), fared even worse, each falling roughly 6% on the session.
Because SOXL is designed to deliver triple the daily performance of its underlying semiconductor benchmark, the widespread losses among its holdings were dramatically amplified at the fund level.
The leveraged structure that makes SOXL attractive during rallies becomes a significant liability when the sector turns lower, as Monday’s session clearly demonstrated.
However, the same mechanics that accelerated today’s decline could just as quickly reverse course if sentiment shifts and investors conclude the threat has been overstated.
Just because Musk, Amodei, and Altman all say they want to slow down AI development today does not mean that meaningful action will follow, particularly with China pushing AI advancement at full speed.
The competitive pressure from China’s aggressive AI buildout makes a genuine industry-wide slowdown difficult to enforce, regardless of what Western tech leaders say publicly.
For investors watching SOXL, the near-term outlook will likely depend less on the rhetoric coming from these executives and more on the concrete steps, if any, that actually follow their weekend warnings.
