Fastenal (FAST) Earnings Signal Broad Industrial Strength Across Data Centers, Aerospace, And Machined Parts

Fastenal (FAST) has delivered a quarterly earnings report that serves as a powerful indicator of accelerating health across the U.S. industrial economy in 2026.

The company’s products include industrial fasteners, safety supplies, and a wide range of industrial materials, making its sales a reliable real-time gauge of manufacturing demand.

Because Fastenal’s sales are short-cycle, there is very little lag between a customer experiencing demand growth and placing an order, giving investors an unusually clear early read on broader earnings season trends.

Heavy manufacturing, which represents approximately 45% of the company’s total sales, posted daily sales growth of 20.2% year over year, a standout figure by any measure.

All other manufacturing segments grew at 13.2% on a daily sales basis, while all other end markets combined posted 12.3% growth, pointing to broad-based momentum.

Net sales reached $2.46 billion, an increase of $330 million from a year earlier, with operating income climbing $90 million over the same period.

President and CEO Jeff Watts described that operating income gain as the largest single-quarter year-over-year increase in the company’s history, a milestone that underscores the scale of the current recovery.

Operating margin rose 90 basis points to 21.5%, while both operating earnings and earnings per share each grew by roughly 20%, reinforcing the quality of the top-line expansion.

Chief Financial Officer Max Tunniclff noted that Fastenal’s trailing 12-month return on invested capital increased 230 basis points to 32.5%, compared with a 10-year average of approximately 28%.

Tunniclff identified machined products, aerospace, and industrial equipment as particularly strong end markets, while also stating, “Growth opportunities were strongest in data centers.”

Management said data-center-related activity was a meaningful contributor to overall sales growth during the quarter, reflecting surging infrastructure investment across the technology sector.

Watts estimated that data-center activity accounted for roughly four to five percentage points of growth, though he acknowledged it was difficult to measure precisely given the company’s range of existing customer relationships.

Direct-material sales increased approximately 19%, outpacing roughly 14% growth in indirect materials, with electrical, tools, and other industrial products also growing faster than the company overall.

Large customers generating $50,000 or more in monthly sales account for 60% of revenue and grew 28%, while smaller customers making up the remaining 40% grew just 1%.

Operating cash flow totaled approximately $422 million, representing 105% of net income, while free cash flow came in at around $350 million, or 87% of net income.

Third-quarter capital spending reached approximately $72 million, focused on hub and facility capacity, automation, FMI equipment, information technology, and transportation assets.

Fastenal maintained its full-year expectation for net capital spending of $310 million to $330 million, signaling continued confidence in sustaining its infrastructure investment through the remainder of the year.

The Institute for Supply Management’s Purchasing Managers’ Index has indicated solid expansion every month this year, a sharp reversal after the U.S. manufacturing sector spent most of the 2023 to 2025 period in contraction.

Fastenal shares have returned 31.7% year to date, with the stock trading near its 52-week high of $52.91, reflecting investor confidence in the ongoing industrial recovery.
