Japanese Stocks Rally As Producer Prices Hit Highest Level In Nearly Three Decades

Tokyo’s equity markets staged a notable rebound on Thursday, recovering some ground lost during the previous four consecutive sessions of declines.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 climbed above the 29,300 level, a move that came despite broadly negative signals overnight from Wall Street markets.

Traders responded to domestic economic data showing producer prices in Japan rose 1.2 percent on month in October, according to the Bank of Japan.

That reading represents producer prices at their highest level in almost three decades, marking a significant inflationary milestone for the Japanese economy.

Investors are also positioning ahead of the new government’s anticipated fresh round of stimulus measures designed to shore up economic growth.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 Index was tracking a move of 213.62 points, or 0.73 percent, to 29,320.40, after touching a session high of 29,326.97 earlier in the day.

In individual stock moves, market heavyweight SoftBank Group lost more than 1 percent, while Uniqlo operator Fast Retailing gained more than 1 percent.

Among automakers, Toyota added almost 1 percent, while Honda moved in the opposite direction, losing almost 1 percent on the session.

Tech stocks showed broad strength, with Advantest and Screen Holdings each gaining almost 2 percent and Tokyo Electron adding almost 1 percent.

Banking stocks also posted gains, with Mitsubishi UFJ Financial and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial each adding almost 1 percent, while Mizuho Financial gained more than 1 percent.

Major exporters were largely higher, with Panasonic and Canon each gaining almost 1 percent, though Sony edged down 0.3 percent on the session.

Pacific Metals was the standout performer of the day, skyrocketing more than 14 percent, while Toppan soared more than 8 percent and Showa Denko surged more than 6 percent.

Tokai Carbon gained more than 4 percent, and both Secom and Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings rose more than 3 percent each on the day.

On the downside, Shiseido plunged almost 6 percent and Asahi Group declined almost 5 percent, with Comsys Holdings and Nexon each falling almost 3 percent.
