Bond Market Signals Rising Default Risk For CoreWeave, Rattling Nvidia (NVDA) Shareholders

CoreWeave (CRWV) shares were hammered after venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya posted a chart on social media showing a troubling spike in the company’s bond yields.

The bonds, which CoreWeave issued in June with a 9.625% coupon and set to expire in 2032, touched a 15% yield, a significant jump that caught the attention of investors across the market.

Rising yields on corporate debt typically signal that bond markets believe the issuer’s risk of default is increasing, and CoreWeave is no exception to that dynamic.

Doubts are beginning to surface about whether the neocloud company can generate returns on its invested capital that exceed its cost of capital, particularly in a rising interest rate environment.

Other neocloud operators are feeling similar pressure, with Nebius (NBIS) shares also declining sharply alongside CoreWeave, reinforcing the sense that sector-wide concerns are mounting.

For Nvidia (NVDA), which has positioned the neocloud industry as a critical pillar of its long-term growth strategy, the turbulence carries direct and meaningful consequences.

Nvidia invested $2 billion each in CoreWeave and Nebius earlier this year, meaning that declines in their stock prices have an immediate impact on Nvidia’s own balance sheet.

Nvidia also signed an agreement with CoreWeave to purchase any unused capacity through 2032, a commitment that functions as a potential liability even if the company never acts on it.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has stated he does not believe the company will have to step in under that agreement, but the arrangement remains a financial overhang that investors cannot ignore.

CoreWeave has pointed to its $104 billion backlog of contracted revenue as evidence that it can cover its debt obligations without needing a backstop from Nvidia or any other partner.

Management argues that the contracted revenue figure is more than sufficient to service its debt, though bond markets appear increasingly skeptical of that position given the yield movements.

While Nvidia’s largest customers remain major investment-grade technology companies building out AI infrastructure and their own platforms, the neoclouds represent one of its most significant potential sources of future growth.

Any sustained deterioration in the financial health of CoreWeave or Nebius would not only affect Nvidia’s investment portfolio but could also slow the pace of GPU procurement that has driven much of Nvidia’s recent revenue expansion.

The bond market’s signal is clear: confidence in the neocloud model is under pressure, and Nvidia shareholders would be wise to watch how this situation develops in the months ahead.
